Hey there SJSU Spartans,
The countdown has begun and December 20th is just around the corner for many of you. Only 55 more days until 2012’s JMC Fall Graduation! To kick off the countdown, we would like to tell you about this year’s graduation speaker, Marti Malloy. This is extremely special for SJSU’s JMC school because she not only is an USA Olympic Judo Champion, but an SJSU JMC alumni as well. Weight Category: 57kg
Birthplace: Oak Harbor, Wash.
Current Residence: San Jose, Calif.
Education: Senior at San Jose State University
Club: USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University

A Washington State native, Malloy relocated to San Jose University where she balanced training for the 2008 Olympic Games with pursuing a degree in Advertising. Malloy first made a name for herself in the senior rankings as a 16-year-old when she claimed a gold medal in her first senior international competition – the 2002 Rendez-Vous Canada – where she defeated a tough field, including both a 2000 Olympian and the previous year’s U.S. National Champion, as well as top athletes from Canada and Great Britain. In 2005, Malloy continued her success at both the junior and senior levels, winning a silver medal at the U.S. Open and becoming the only U.S. athlete to win gold at the Junior Pan American Championships. In 2007, Malloy moved up from 57kg to 63kg where she placed ninth at the World Championships. Although she competed at the 2008 Pan American Championships as a 63kg player, Malloy moved back down to 57kg in 2008 and has since won medals at both World Cup and Pan American Championship events. After placing 5th at the 2011 World Championships, taking a bronze at the 2012 Paris Grand Slam and securing medals at various world cups in 2011 and 2012 Marti qualified for the 2012 Olympic Team and competed in London on July 30th where she was able to capture a bronze medal! Marti is currently #1 in the United States at 57kg and #7 in the world. Marti graduated from San Jose State in 2010 on the Dean’s List and with a BS in Advertising and a minor in Psychology. Marti continues to train at San Jose State in preparation for Rio 2016, where she is also an assistant coach.
